The Lungau region has been declared a Biosphere park by UNESCO, which means that the Lungau consists of a lot of natural beauty. What maintains this beautiful nature, is that in this area people live and work in an authentic way with respect for the natural environment as a priority. Furthermore, the region is very environmentally friendly and has sustainable production methods to preserve the ecosystem and the cultural landscape. Due to the long-isolated location of the region, almost all characteristic cultures have been well preserved. Only after the construction of the Tauernautobahn in the 70's the accessibility became optimal.

In 2016, the Weisspriachtal (one of the seven side valleys of the Lungau) with the river Longa, has been declared the most beautiful area of the Salzburgerland and the second most beautiful region of Austria! This was an election of the ORF program '9 Plätze 9 Schätze' in which the Austrians could vote themselves. These are indications that this is a very special part of Austria. Here you will find real authenticity where people are proud of their origin and where value is still attached to nature, culture and traditions

Did you know that the Lungau is the area with the most hours of sunshine in Austria?
This is partly due to the southern location with generally more favorable weather influences from the Mediterranean region. In the North, the Lungau is protected by the mountain ranges of the Hohe Tauern, the Radstätter Tauern and the Niedere Tauern. Because of the sheltered location the bad weather from the north is often stopped. As a result, the renowned ‘fohnwinds’ are therefore hardly noticeable, resulting in a much more stable climate. The summers are generally warm with lots of sunshine, while the winters are colder with guaranteed snow. The Lungau is a high plateau located at more than 1000m above the sea level. The sum of these conditions creates a very snow-secure environment with a much longer than average ski season. The Austrians do not call the Lungau "Österreichischen Sibirien" for nothing!
Due to the high location of the region there is no pollen which is very favourable for people with allergies or asthmatic complaints.
The area is also regularly visited by top athletes for high-level training. Nowhere in Austria is the bio-diversity as high as in the Lungau. Different mountain ranges with their own characteristics come together here, resulting in a lot of unique vegetation and animal species. The landscape has many faces. For example, in the autumn the Lungau may be at its best with its unspoiled wild nature, mountain lakes (more than 60 !!) and golden-yellow trees. This has given the Lungau its nickname 'Klein Kanada'!
It is also worth mentioning that the high plateau of the Lungau is relatively flat and is surrounded at a suitable distance by the higher mountain ranges. This makes it a very suitable area for young and old to walk or cycle with beautiful views of the surrounding high mountains. It also has the largest E-bike network in Austria with countless free charging stations.
